JOURNEY TO NATIONALS

More Than a Performance

At the end of January 2024, Figure Skating in Harlem’s performance team traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to perform at the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships. The trip brought opportunities to shine on the ice, explore college life, and join an important conversation about the future of the sport.

Our students were joined by FSH Board Member Tina Lundgren for a tour of The Ohio State University. The visit offered a glimpse of campus life, connecting their journey on the ice with possibilities for their education beyond high school.

The team also attended “Breaking the Ice,” a panel discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion in figure skating. Among the speakers was our very own alumna and Assistant Skating Director, Ila Epperson, who participated alongside a U.S. Figure Skating DEI leader. For our students, seeing an FSH alumna contribute to this conversation made the connection between representation and leadership especially meaningful.

From performing at Nationals to exploring a university campus and hearing from leaders in the sport, the trip embodied FSH’s commitment to experiences that extend beyond skating—helping girls envision new possibilities for themselves.
