Leadership

Overview

At the very heart of FSH, is the vision to create leaders of tomorrow by providing the girls with the tools necessary to succeed today. Through cultural field-trips, life skills classes and career exploration trips the students learn about identity, self-actualization and goals and planning for their future. Our holistic approach to leadership development supports our students’ intellectual, physical and emotional developmental growth, and equips hundreds of girls with the tools they need to avoid high-risk behaviors, make positive choices for their futures, and improve the quality of their lives. In recognition of our leadership skills training, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition awarded FSH with the prestigious Community Leadership Award for excellence in youth development.

This is a GREAT PROGRAM! Two of my nieces participated. One of them excelled in school as a recipient of the Magic Johnson Scholarship! She's attending an excellent college and is doing great!

LIFE SKILLS

Our Life Skills classes reinforce FSH’s core values by creating a safe space in which our girls can develop their own voices and foster a sisterhood.

Through conversations on current and relevant topics, they will develop socio-emotional awareness, cultural sensitivity, and communication skills.

Certified licensed social workers deliver weekly Life Skills classes focusing on nutrition, peer pressure, HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying), conflict resolution, positive self-esteem, body image, and social and emotional skill development. Social workers will hold regular office hours to provide one-on-one counseling services and resources as needed.

CAREER EXPLORATION

The purpose of FSH’s career centered trips are to inspire students to dreams and broaden their horizons. Our trips expose girls to exciting careers, including those that are typically underrepresented by women.

Several times per year, our students visit various workplaces around New York City, meet with working professionals in diverse fields and partake in company tours, lectures and panel discussions with professionals. Past trips have included Google, Sony, CNN, Viacom, and Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elana Kagan.

CULTURAL TRIPS

Students participate in a variety of cultural experiences designed to enhance their appreciation of the arts, culture, and community service.

Past trips have included a special screening of He Named Me Malala, a performance by Ballet Hispanico at The Apollo Theater, and the Broadway play, Eclipsed, starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o.

FSH’s vision is to empower every young girl with the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams. She will be a powerful speaker, effective leader, live a healthy lifestyle and be a global citizen.
