Organization:  Figure Skating in Harlem is a not-for-profit community-based organization providing educational, cultural and athletic opportunities for girls in Harlem through the unique discipline and art of figure skating. FSH provides an innovative after-school ice skating and educational program designed to build teamwork, leadership, confidence and academic achievement. FSH students pledge to maintain at least a B average in school throughout the season.  

Job Description:  As part of the ICE: I Can Excel skating team, the Skating Instructor will work under the supervision of the Director of Skating. The Skating Instructor will teach from the Learn to Skate USA curriculum to enable all participants to achieve the skills necessary to either skate for fun the rest of their lives or to move competently into the U.S. Figure Skating testing and/or competitive structure.

Duties:   

  • Foster positive social and emotional growth in students as they participate in all FSH activities 
  • Help create a safe and supportive environment to maximize student engagement during program hours 
  • Plan and execute interactive lesson plans based on knowledge of theory, practical and techniques of skating to introduce, develop and master skills within the Learn to Skate USA testing structure 
  • Implement different teaching strategies and exercises to aid in all learning abilities and styles 
  • Report immediately all accidents/incidents and Inform the Director of Skating of any program issues and concerns regarding student progress and behavior 
  • Uphold FSH Values and youth development principles 
  • Record and update attendance and skating skills accordingly 
  • Encourage positive student behavior that promotes character development 
  • Maintain meaningful positive rapport with students and parents 
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and other professional development opportunities 
  • Choreograph solo and/or group performances for the annual ice show and special events 
  • Perform additional related duties as instructed by skating management team  

Qualifications 

  • Must be at minimum a Learn to Skate USA compliant instructor. 
  • At least 21 years of age. 
  • Coaching experience with elementary, middle and high school level students. 
  • Must be energetic, enthusiastic and likes working with young people. 
  • Knowledge in other areas like nutrition, sports injuries, anatomy is a plus. 
  • Ability to work with other instructors or specialists over the course of the season. 

Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 4:30-7:30pm; Saturdays 9-10am 

Hourly rate: $38/hour
