College Coach 

Reports to: Director of Career and Leadership Initiatives

Status: Part-time, 10-15 hours/week

Organization: Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is a thriving youth development organization – the first to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement. Our award-winning after-school and summer programs provide girls ages 6 to 18 from low-income communities with access to innovative education, health and wellness services that help them reach their fullest potential.

Our VISION is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams. Headquartered in Harlem, we also have a satellite site in Detroit, serving girls in that community. Job Description: Through our Pipeline to Power campaign, Figure Skating in Harlem will embark on its latest initiative to support college-aged and early career professionals who have graduated from its programs. College readiness is a huge component of FSH’s programming where 100% of seniors have been accepted and gone on to college. We want to continue this tradition by bolstering existing programs to meet the changing needs of students in the program.

Reporting to the Director of Career and Leadership Initiatives, the College Coach will have the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design of college access and college success programming.
  • Advise and work one-on-one with participants to support their college application process and completion of financial aid forms, as well as help participants research and apply for scholarships
  • Facilitate weekly group sessions during the academic year focused on college preparation, financial aid, and other post-secondary opportunities.
  • Coordinate college tours, college rep visits, and other relevant events.
  • Support participants through their first year in college by facilitating virtual sessions and advisement that assist with navigating their first year of college.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership and Career Coach to identify and support participants pursuits of internships and/or employment opportunities.
  • Maintain data and narrative documentation of program participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Flexible schedule with ability to work Wednesday evenings.
  • 3+ years related job experience in education, youth-serving, or community-based organizations; experience with providing counseling to students on the college admissions process including financial aid, revision of essays, college selections, and college enrollment.
  • Experience with facilitating in-person and virtual workshops.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, with a passion for college access and college success.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously and balancing competing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to Figure Skating in Harlem’s mission and the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Suite, Amilia, Apricot, Salesforce, Google Suite)

Compensation: $30/hour
